Making this modern wooden room sculpture was a journey backwards.

Normally I get inspired by something and then I try to realize that inspiration in wood and paint.
In this case I gave myself the task to build “something”.
Just looking for an unusual shape, this partly rectangular and partly skewed, this object grew.

To make it less solid one side got bars and the front a door with window pane.

Incorporating glass marbles in the sides increases the transparency of this room sculpture.

The inside of this small decorative room sculpture is as visible as the outside.
The pattern from the outside continues at the inside.

Where the gold leaf and marbles at the inside better reflect the light, they even seek more attention than at the outside of this room sculpture.

Growing in the process , my “task” became a fantasy cabinet.
The left side of the cabinet with the bars remembered me of pictures of the Parthenon, a former temple on the Athenian Acropolis.
So the title of this room sculpture became Parthenon.

The Parthenon

The Parthenon, an enduring symbol of ancient Greek civilization, stands proudly atop the Acropolis in Athens, Greece.
Built in the 5th century BCE during the height of the Athenian Empire, it is a masterpiece of classical Greek architecture, dedicated to the goddess Athena, the city's patron deity.

The Parthenon is a Doric temple constructed primarily of Pentelic marble, renowned for its architectural perfection and aesthetic harmony.
It features a rectangular floor plan with eight columns on the facade and seventeen columns on each flank, meticulously designed to create an illusion of perfect symmetry. The temple's columns, with their distinctive fluted shafts and simple capitals, evoke a sense of strength and grace.

The exterior of the Parthenon is adorned with intricate marble sculptures and friezes, depicting various mythological and historical scenes, including the Panathenaic procession and the battles of the gods.
These sculptural reliefs, once brightly painted, added vibrancy and narrative depth to the temple's facade.

Inside the Parthenon, the centerpiece was the colossal chryselephantine statue of Athena Parthenos, crafted by the renowned sculptor Phidias.
This awe-inspiring statue, made of gold and ivory, stood over 12 meters tall and captured the majesty and power of the goddess of wisdom and warfare.

Despite centuries of wear and damage from wars, earthquakes, and human intervention, the Parthenon remains an architectural marvel and a symbol of ancient Greek achievements in art, philosophy, and culture.
Its enduring legacy continues to inspire awe and admiration, drawing visitors from around the world to marvel at its timeless beauty and historical significance.
